World of Warcraft to go Free to Play

Speaking to PCG at its studios in Irvine, California, WoW’s lead designer, Tom Chilton made clear that the rise of the free-to-play western MMO hasn’t gone unnoticed at Blizzard, explaining that “at some point, it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee.”

I never thought I’d say this but…. PLEASE NO! You’re probably thinking I’m mad at this point. Why would I want to continue paying my 12.99 a month to play if I could get it for free? Simple – drop the payments and you drop the standards for entry.

Ok that sounded very elitist, didn’t it? I’m sorry. It’s just that I’ve played many free-to-plays, and when there is no reason for someone to pay for something it also means that anyone can play with no dedication whatsoever. I read another blog the other day about the suggestion for a “premium” server where you pay more to play, with a screening process taking place, therefore cutting out goldsellers, casuals and the likes. I’m a semi-casual player myself, but the amount of people like Xwin (You gotta be on my server to understand) already populating a paid server makes me sorta wish there was this kind of screen.

Our server is fairly low-pop, but imagine the amount of new players flocking in once it goes free. Players that don’t have to worry about things like being reported for bad behaviour because, heck, if you get the banhammer, you just create another account and continue harassing others. Goldsellers and farmers would flock in by the hundreds, a problem already but imagine taking away that need for a credit or game card.

I like things the way they are (sorta) and will continue selling my soul to Blizzard one 12.99 a month for the foreseeable future.

Rant over. Oh and wow I did two posts today…

  1. We can hope that the free WoW ‘accounts’ are on their own domain, with say lots of advertising and definitely no expansions and say only one pvp realm.

“For more game play, sign-up for a full account!”

    1. Hmm, that might be a good idea, sort of like the suggestion of premium servers. I could actually live with that. The only deterrent would possibly be that many people would be tempted to drop the subscription and move over to FTP, leaving the paid servers a desolate wasteland.
